    MONEY
We are learning about money during Math class presently. Students in grade 1 should be able to identify all of the Canadian coins. They should also be able to count money combinations to 20 cents and be able to figure out different ways to represent the same amount (e.g. 5 cents = a nickel = 5 pennies).
Here are some activities you can play at home.
    How much in my pocket?
Take out 4 or 5 coins from your wallet and ask your child to count it. We have been working on starting with the largest coin and counting on by the smaller denominations. You could both select a few coins and the person who has the most money gets the point for the game. Continue until the first person has 5 points accumulated.
    Shopping
Real-life experiences are the best way for children to get used to working with money. For example, last week I gave each student some play money. I told them I had a surprise, but to buy it they needed 20 cents. Students had to tell me how much money they had on their desk and how much more they needed to have the 20 cents necessary to purchase the surprise. Having students compare the cost of something to the amount of money in their hand is a great way to get more comfortable with money.

    TIME
We are starting to learn about time. Students have learned about the hour hand (longue aiguille) and the minute hand (courte aiguille) and how to read the time to the hour and the half-hour on both the analog and digital clock. Students are also associating time of day with particular activities (e.g. 9:00 in the morning I go to school). Here are some activities that you and your child might like to play to reinforce this concept.

    Telling Time Game
Click on the link to play. This is a terrific game where children are shown a time and then need to move the hour hand and the minute hand to the correct position. The game checks their answers immediately and once you've completed a level successfully you move on to the next level. Remember that the hour hand is always between two numbers when showing time to the half hour.
    Clock Face Race
{blank-clock-faces-without-numbers1.jpg} To play this game you need 2 die and a pencil for each player.
Print a copy of this clock face for each player.
Fill in the number 1 in the correct position on the clock before beginning.
Take turns rolling the die and adding them together. (e.g. rolling a 2 and a 3 equals 5, so you fill in the 5 in the correct position on the clock)
Write the sum (answer) in the correct position on the clock.
Continue taking turns. If you roll a number that you already have on your clock face, you miss a turn.
The first player to complete their clockface wins!
    Writing Time
The following worksheet you can use with your child to practice reading and/or telling time. Take out two pencils (crayons, pens, etc), one that's a bit longer then the other to distinguish between the minute hand and the hour hand - you might like to use colour to identify the two hands as well. Tell your child a time and have him/her show it to you on the analog and digital clock. You might want to print several copies, or have your child write the digital time in different places on the paper and not necessarily in the box provided in order to get more practice.
